How hidden content uncovered a long-standing visitor engagement opportunity for Travel Drumheller.

Drumheller is internationally recognized for its prehistoric history and the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which draws dinosaur enthusiasts from around the world.

Travel Drumheller saw an opportunity to encourage more of those visitors to explore beyond the museum and discover the community’s shops, restaurants, attractions and unmistakable local character.

The answer was hiding in plain sight: Drumheller’s collection of quirky concrete dinosaurs.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum attracts significant visitation, but many travellers leave the area shortly after their museum experience.

Travel Drumheller wanted to give visitors a compelling reason to spend more time exploring the wider community—and create more opportunities for downtown businesses to benefit from that visitation.

The organization needed an experience that could:

Encourage visitors to explore beyond the museum

Disperse foot traffic throughout Drumheller

Connect visitors with local shops, restaurants and attractions

Bring the community’s concrete dinosaurs to life

Appeal to families in an engaging and memorable way

Be developed without placing a significant burden on its internal team

Travel Drumheller worked with tourismo to transform 12 of its concrete dinosaurs into an interactive, self-guided visitor experience: the Dino Trail.

Built using the tourismo platform, the Dino Trail guides visitors from one dinosaur to the next through the Travel Drumheller website.

The themed trail itself took only a few hours to build, giving the team an efficient way to connect individual landmarks into one cohesive visitor journey.

Dedicated QR codes placed at each dinosaur unlock original animated content and narrated stories.

Rather than simply seeing the statues, visitors can interact with each one and uncover something new as they move through the community.

The digital trail highlights nearby restaurants, shops and activities, helping visitors find places to eat, take a break or pick up a souvenir along the way.

These timely recommendations connect the experience with local businesses when visitors are already nearby and deciding what to do next.

Visitors who scan all 12 QR codes are invited to collect a Dino Trail colouring book from the Travel Drumheller Visitor Information Centre.

The physical reward provides an additional incentive to complete the experience while giving families a tangible reminder of their visit.

Creative support from concept to completion

tourismo’s creative services team and collaborators helped develop the original animations, children’s stories and colouring book that brought the experience to life.

This gave Travel Drumheller a fully realized campaign without requiring its internal team to produce every creative element.

Within a matter of weeks, Travel Drumheller transformed familiar community landmarks into an interactive tourism experience designed to encourage exploration.

Local business recommendations incorporated throughout the journey

A physical reward for visitors who complete the trail

A themed itinerary built in only a few hours

A complete engagement campaign developed in a matter of weeks

The Dino Trail demonstrates how destinations can use assets they already have in imaginative new ways.

By combining local character, interactive storytelling, and carefully placed business recommendations, Travel Drumheller created an experience that is distinctly its own—and gives visitors more reasons to explore the community beyond its best-known attraction.

The BC Farmers Market Trail partnered with tourismo to launch a Rewards Program that turned app engagement into real-world rewards. Visitors earned points by completing challenges and checking in at participating farmers' markets, then redeemed them for exclusive merchandise through a branded online store.

The team wanted to increase repeat visits, reward participation in the Farmers Market Trail Passport, and strengthen brand loyalty with meaningful perks, while keeping fulfillment simple across a large regional campaign.

tourismo built a branded WooCommerce redemption store, integrated with the Farmers Market Trail Passport app. Users earned points in the app by completing challenges and check-ins, and redeemed them online for custom rewards including BC Farmers Market Trail Veggie Socks and West Coast Seeds Insect Beneficial Blend. Automated redemption rules and reporting streamlined the entire experience.

Users access the Rewards Market directly from the app. With one click, they’re taken to the online store where they can browse and redeem rewards.

BC Farmers Market Trail custom veggie socks, a branded reward, available for 3,000 points.

West Coast Seeds Insect Beneficial Blend, a unique reward option connecting local food and sustainability, available for 2,000 points.

The program drove strong engagement, with hundreds of redemptions in the first cycle. Rewards connected to the market’s values—like branded merchandise and garden-friendly seed packs—deepened user connection, while the store setup created a scalable model for future offerings.

The BC Ale Trail is one of Canada’s largest and most successful culinary tourism programs. It connects travellers with more than 220 breweries across 22 regional trails, bringing together craft beer, local food, accommodations and outdoor experiences throughout the province.

The BC Ale Trail moved its app to tourismo to create a more flexible and engaging experience for visitors, and a platform the organization could continue building on.

The BC Ale Trail had already built a large and enthusiastic audience. The next challenge was keeping people engaged and giving them new reasons to visit breweries and explore communities across British Columbia.

Encourage repeat visits and ongoing exploration

Support check-ins, points, rewards, quizzes, and seasonal challenges

Make it easier to launch new campaigns and experiences

Give participating breweries greater visibility

Measure engagement and demonstrate impact

Grow with the program without requiring a separate product for every new idea

Visitors earn points by checking in at breweries, answering quiz questions, and participating in challenges. The experience turns digital engagement into a reason to get out and explore, driving real visits rather than simply generating app activity.

Programs such as the Views & Brews Photo Challenge and Fresh Hops Photo Challenge give people timely new reasons to hit the trail, discover breweries and share their experiences.

The BC Ale Trail can launch new challenges, campaigns and regional experiences within the same platform, without purchasing and managing a separate technology product for each initiative.

Greater visibility for breweries and communities

Participating breweries benefit from dedicated profiles, app exposure and inclusion in province-wide campaigns designed to increase awareness and foot traffic.

Built-in analytics help the BC Ale Trail understand how visitors are engaging, demonstrate results to partners, and use those insights to strengthen future campaigns.

tourismo gave the BC Ale Trail one flexible platform for managing its app, brewery content, and visitor engagement programs.

By combining strong destination partnerships, compelling content, and flexible technology, the BC Ale Trail has created an engagement ecosystem that keeps people exploring.

More than 500,000 points collected in a single year

More than two million website pageviews annually

Partnerships with more than 55 municipalities and destination organizations

The BC Ale Trail generated more than four times as many check-ins in two years as the Bandwango-powered Bucks County Ale Trail publicly reported from 2019 to 2023.

The comparison demonstrates what is possible when great content, committed destination partners, and flexible technology work together to keep visitors actively exploring.

The BC Ale Trail is no longer operating just one digital passport. With tourismo, it has a platform it can continue building on—launching new challenges, campaigns, and regional experiences that turn digital engagement into measurable visitation.

How Savour Alberta South unlocked southern' Alberta's development potential.

Connecting the Spots | How Savour Alberta Unlocked their Development Potential

Southern Alberta is home to remarkable culinary experiences, from craft breweries and restaurants to farms, producers and some of the province’s most distinctive ingredients.

Tourism Medicine Hat, working alongside destination organizations and communities across the region, saw an opportunity to connect these individual experiences through Savour Alberta: a collaborative tourism initiative designed to encourage visitors to explore farther, stay longer, and discover more of Southern Alberta.

Southern Alberta was attracting visitors, particularly during the high season, but tourism activity was often concentrated in individual communities and attractions.

Connect destinations and tourism businesses across a large geographic area

Encourage visitors to explore beyond the places they already knew

Package individual experiences into compelling regional itineraries

Increase awareness of lesser-known businesses and communities

Give partners an easy way to contribute and update their information

Create new reasons to visit throughout the year

Without a shared platform, coordinating hundreds of listings, multiple destination partners and region-wide campaigns would have required significant time and manual effort.

tourismo gave Savour Alberta one collaborative platform for organizing regional tourism content, engaging partners and turning individual experiences into curated visitor journeys.

tourismo’s AI-assisted listing tools helped Savour Alberta add more than 150 tourism businesses and experiences to the platform in just a few days.

Businesses could then claim and enhance their profiles, while Savour Alberta and its destination partners maintained a centralized view of the region’s tourism inventory.

Destination organizations and participating businesses could contribute information and keep their listings current within the same platform.

Content published through tourismo could appear directly on the Savour Alberta website, reducing duplication and making it easier to maintain accurate information across the regional experience.

Savour Alberta used tourismo to transform its growing inventory into five interactive itineraries designed around different interests, locations and travel timelines.

These included experiences ranging from the eight-stop Highway 3 Ale Trail to a 62-stop Farm to Fork guide.

Each itinerary could be organized into routes and stops, published directly to the website and updated as the region’s tourism offerings evolved.

tourismo also gave the team a central place to organize subregions, communicate with participating businesses and coordinate campaign activity across multiple communities.

Within weeks, Savour Alberta created a connected regional experience that made Southern Alberta’s culinary tourism offerings easier to discover and explore.

More than 150 tourism listings added in a matter of days

Five interactive itineraries created and published

A 62-stop Farm to Fork guide showcasing the depth of the region

An eight-stop Highway 3 Ale Trail connecting breweries across Southern Alberta

One shared platform for regional content, partner collaboration and campaign management

Savour Alberta now has a flexible foundation it can continue building on—adding new businesses, developing seasonal itineraries and creating campaigns that encourage visitors to explore more of the region.

By connecting destination development with destination marketing, tourismo helped turn a collection of individual tourism experiences into one cohesive and compelling regional story.
